26 DAYS TIL 30
In the last 30 years I’m proud of/grateful for: my knack for breaking down and understanding how things work, and then teaching it to others.
I first recognized that this was a strong point of mine when I was a teaching assistant for an organic chemistry lab as an undergrad. I used to teach the students how to use the various instruments and pieces of equipment. Little did I know that it would eventually be exactly what I do everyday as my job. Of course, there’s a lot more in-depth understanding of how things work because I also do a considerable amount of troubleshooting and repairs now. And the scientific instruments are fancier and usually more complicated/delicate. But the crux of my job involves me figuring out how something works and then using that knowledge to train others to use it.
How I celebrated it: yesterday I trained two delightful grad students to use the nanoindenter all morning, then treated myself to lunch at the Rusty Taco (new restaurant a block away from my building).
Yes, I mostly reward myself with food. Because I like eating.
