Blood sugar

Last week I had my annual lady-doctor appointment. In addition to the usual physical invasion, as a bonus for turning 30, I “won” some “free” blood work to test if I had high cholesterol and diabetes. (I’m convinced this is the gentle warm up for the mammograms after 40 and the colonoscopies after 50.)

Anyway, to my surprise, my fasting glucose was high. My oral glucose tolerance test from back in October was fine—86 mg/dL fasting—so I was caught a little off guard by the 111 in the recent test. The cut-off for normal is 99 and 126+ is considered diabetic, so technically this test just showed “impaired fasting glucose.”

My lady doctor recommends repeating the test and also checking my hemoglobin A1c (shows how good my blood sugar control has been in the last month or so). I’m waiting to hear back from CF clinic for their opinion first.

Not sure how I feel about it. No doubt I’ve had a really rough month and a half with hemoptysis and 3 courses of oral antibiotics. I’ve been ridiculously tired (often in bed by 9 p.m.) and lost a little weight. There’s no doubt that my higher “infection load” has had higher energy requirements and it wouldn’t surprise me that my pancreas is a little strained/confused about how much insulin I need.

But a week into this double-duty antibiotic course, I feel great, am barely coughing, feel more energetic and am not needing as much sleep. I am on the upswing. Maybe my blood sugar is, too. Hopefully the high glucose test was related to an exacerbation and is temporary.

I’m waiting to hear my CF doctor’s recommendation, but in the meantime I think I’ll start up journaling my diet again. Helps me maintain a consistent and regular eating routine, which might help with my blood sugar.
